1. Givenchy Gelée D’Interdit Smoothing Gloss Balm Crystal Shine in Lune Argentee #5 is a glittery lip gloss, perfect to apply over any lipstick you are wearing to take it from the workday to a holiday-party night. The more glitter, the better!
2. Clinique’s High Impact Lipstick in Red-y to Wear is the best red lipstick ever. It stays on fantastically, and nothing says holiday more than a great black liner and red lips.
3. I love the look of liquid eyeliner, but I hate the hassle of getting it on. Sephora has a new felt tip pen eyeliner that is perfect: Doe Eyed 2 In 1 Felt Eyeliner. It has a chiseled tip, so you can apply either a thin line or a thick line, depending on your look. Love.

Spring 2012 Brow Trends Bold Brushed up Thin or Mussed Beauty Etc. on Flickr.
beautyetc.com/blog/kfrost/spring-2012-brow-trends-bold-br…
As you’ve seen from our Spring 2012 backstage beauty coverage, next season’s makeup, hair and nail trends are coming fast and furious. The newest trends to hit your beauty vanity next spring are showing up left and right, and one area of the face that’s receiving major play is the eyebrow.
Brows are thicker than ever and the quicker you can get yours growing in, the better. Not only are brows fuller, but also backstage beauty maestros are finding new ways of showing them off. Check out this primer so your arches are on point next spring.
Brush Your Brows Up
Did you think Brooke Shield’s bushy brows were on their way out? Certainly not, especially with the continued popularity of “It” model Arizona Muse (above). As a trend, this style sticks, namely because brushed-up brows make normal arches look thicker, which is a sign of youth. But now, this look is being intensified. Get out your brow wax and brow gel: Brushed-up eyebrows are the way to go next spring.
Less Than Perfect
Perfectly groomed brows: so yesterday. Why? The messy brow is back. Well, not too messy. But the perfectly clean lines that you get from waxing and threading will fall to the wayside. How to achieve the look? Keep the lowest row of brow hairs unshaped to create a slightly messy line.

The Darker, The Better
As seen on the runways of Joseph Altuzarra (above right) and Derek Lam (above left), the darker the brows, the better the beauty—regardless of what your hair color is. Anyone with light blonde or black tresses will be sporting the super-dark brow, whether it be penciled in for a severe look, or softly shaded with a darker brow shadow for a softer feel. This is a welcome change to the bleached brow that dominated runways in seasons’ past—a look that only a supermodel could pull off. If you want drama, this is your arch.

Could Thin Be On Its Way Back In?
While the runways were sporting full thick brows, a few runway shows dared to bring back the thin eyebrow, a la ’90s Kevyn Aucoin. To achieve this look, brows are erased with concealer and then penciled in to reflect a rounder shape. Follow by brushing through for a softer feel. Since brow trends change drastically every 10 years, we’ve seen the thicker brow for quite a few years now, so could it be that the eyebrow tides are changing? The better question is: Are you ready for it? –Elke Von Freudenberg

While runway trends continue to dictate that women will be coveting a thicker brow, men tend to have the problem of maintaining and keeping their already very thick brows from growing all-out bushy. But it doesn’t have to be that hard. While brows are different for men than for women, a lot of the tricks that women do to keep their brows in check can also be practiced by the guys to ensure their manly brows look clean and neat—and never feminine.
See a Pro. Most men wouldn’t dream of setting foot into a spa or salon to get those brows under control, but seeing a pro shouldn’t intimidate them. The No.1 request of male clients is the plea to not have a “girl” brow done or, in other words, a perfectly shaped and arched brow. Men: Do your research before making that appointment. Ask to see if there’s any before-and-after photos of male clients that have had their brows done so you can assess the actual work. Don’t be afraid to speak up for what you want or don’t want. Pros: If you’re not asking your male clients enough questions to make sure you’re giving them exactly what they want, start now! As you know, badly done brows take forever to grow back, and your men will be doing their homework first before paying you a visit. To keep your male clients happy between visits, recommend at-home maintenance, such as light tweezing, but make sure he knows to leave it to the experts to trim long hairs and even thin out too-bushy brows so that the final result doesn’t look too thick or heavy. The goal is to make his brows look groomed, but not overly done.
Waxing or Tweezing? While most people prefer waxing, more women and men are turning to tweezing or threading to achieve a more customized look to their brows without the skin breakout hassles. While most men think all they can do is wax, they may want to consider tweezing as well. Why? Tweezing lets you go in and mess up that perfect line that waxing tends to create. This, in turn, makes the brow appear more natural-looking and less defined (which skews feminine). Tweezing is also more precise and lets the pro get only the hairs needed, creating a more natural yet cleaned-up brow for men.
Perfecting the Brow. Women who seek professional brow grooming tend to be their own pros when it comes to doing their brow makeup, but did you know that men can get in on this as well? The goal is to create a brow that doesn’t look made-up or “done,” but that also appears consistent. With the invention of brow mascara, men can fill in the gaps and sparse areas of their brows—with no one being the wiser. Brow mascaras are softer in color and not as thick as regular mascaras, so they’re easier to apply and can make a man’s brow look more groomed and defined. Just remove excess product from the mascara wand, and then lightly brush through the brow where needed. Let it dry, and then with a clean brow brush or mascara wand, brush through to remove any excess off the skin while also blending the brow color. You will get instant natural-looking brows and, trust me, no one will be able to tell there was any makeup involved! –Elke Von Freudenberg

New brow gel replaces a host of products
Jackie Silver, National Anti-Aging Beauty Examiner September 19, 2011 -
A defined eyebrow arch takes years off your look by creating a mini eye lift. Taking an extra row off the bottom of the inner portion of the brow does so, too, by creating more space and widening and opening the eyes. Also, a soft highlight on the bone wakes up the eye and makes brows look groomed between appointments by bouncing light off the hairs that are growing in.
These tips come from highly acclaimed photography makeup artist and eyebrow specialist Elke Von Freudenberg. Her expertise as a licensed esthetician in both California and New York in shaping eyebrows for celebrities and models has made her a highly sought-after eyebrow expert.
“Eyebrows do much more than frame the eyes. They also tell others around you a story - your story. Are you confident? Tired? Sad? Powerful? Once women have had their eyebrows done terribly wrong do they realize the importance of eyebrows and what they tell others about you. The goal of perfect eyebrows is to have people notice your eyes and you, not your eyebrows,” says Von Freudenberg.

Much like how you use styling products to whip your hair into a lovely hairdo, eyebrows need a little something extra to help them retain the shape you “style.” The rule of thumb is that thicker, coarser eyebrow hairs call for a strong wax to hold their shape, while thinner eyebrow hairs respond better to a lighter product, such as a brow gel, to keep them how you want them without weighing down the hairs.
So, when it comes to shaping eyebrows, what’s the true difference between brow gel and wax, and how do you use them to shape eyebrows properly? Let’s take a look.
Brow Gel
Brow gel is the lighter of the two and is meant for eyebrow hairs that are thin and light. You’ll find that most brow gels come in a mascara-wand format; using the spoolie, brush on the gel through the eyebrows in the direction you want the brow hairs to go, and then let the gel dry. The best brow gels won’t turn gray after they have dried and don’t leave arches feeling crunchy or stiff. To help you determine whether each of these pitfalls may occur, check the texture of the gel and how thick it is. A quality brow gel should be thinner in consistency (to avoid a hard, crunchy feel). Also, brow gel should leave a glossy—never matte—look to the hairs.
Application: For brow gel, draw in the eyebrow first using brow colors (shadow or pencil), and then apply brow gel after; this helps lock-in the color and makes your design water-resistant.
Brow Wax
Brow wax is thicker, and as the name implies, it has a waxy texture. This type of arch-molding product is made for thicker, coarser and wavy brow hairs. Since these hairs are usually harder to keep in place, you need stronger holding power, which brow wax affords. Available in different shades, brow wax comes in either pencil form or in a jar.
Application: To apply, use a clear wax that won’t interfere with any colored brow shadow or pencil. Apply using either fingertips or my favorite, a clean spoolie brush. If you use a brush, brush the wax through in the direction you want the eyebrow hairs to go.
Tip: You can apply colorless brow wax either before or after brow color; each method affords a different result. For bolder color, apply brow wax first through the brow hairs, then apply brow shadow with a straight or angle brow brush. You’ll notice that the brow color goes on a tad darker and with a sharper line; the brow wax gives you a nice base. If you desire a softer look, apply brow color first, then set and seal the shading with brow wax.
Makeup Artist Trick: I love layering products on my spoolie. First, I pick up the clear brow wax with my clean spoolie brush, then I dip the brush into my brow shadow. Finally, I brush the mixture through through the eyebrows in the direction I want the hairs to lay. Do this lightly, and after a few tries, you’ll know exactly how much of each product you need to get the right mix for you. –Elke Von Freudenberg

Facial Hair Removal YouBeauty.com on Flickr.
Plucking
Pros: Precise removal of hair that works best on stray whiskers and the eyebrow area. If you’re allergic to certain waxing ingredients, plucking is a better way to go, and since you’re pulling the hair out from the root, it slows down re-growth.
Cons: Plucking is time-consuming. It can be more painful for sensitive areas like the upper lip and the hair removal process is not as convenient for larger patches of hair.
How to: When tweezing the brows, hold the tip or slant against the skin the whole time, going the direction of hair growth, suggests Elke Von Freudenberg, a Manhattan-based celebrity eyebrow specialist who has worked with the likes of Kate Moss and Anjelica Huston.
“By keeping the tweezer against the skin, you lessen the ouch factor,” she says. Von Freudenberg also advises that your brows should start between the bridge of your nose and your tear duct—any more space than that will actually make your nose appear bigger.
What to look out for: Avoid dropping your tweezer, which will cause it to lose some of its spring and can chip the ends.
Try: Tweezerman slant tweezers, which come with a lifetime warranty—you can even mail it to them for free re-sharpening when your tweezers start to get dull.
