While runway trends continue to dictate that women will be coveting a thicker brow, men tend to have the problem of maintaining and keeping their already very thick brows from growing all-out bushy. But it doesn’t have to be that hard. While brows are different for men than for women, a lot of the tricks that women do to keep their brows in check can also be practiced by the guys to ensure their manly brows look clean and neat—and never feminine.
See a Pro. Most men wouldn’t dream of setting foot into a spa or salon to get those brows under control, but seeing a pro shouldn’t intimidate them. The No.1 request of male clients is the plea to not have a “girl” brow done or, in other words, a perfectly shaped and arched brow. Men: Do your research before making that appointment. Ask to see if there’s any before-and-after photos of male clients that have had their brows done so you can assess the actual work. Don’t be afraid to speak up for what you want or don’t want. Pros: If you’re not asking your male clients enough questions to make sure you’re giving them exactly what they want, start now! As you know, badly done brows take forever to grow back, and your men will be doing their homework first before paying you a visit. To keep your male clients happy between visits, recommend at-home maintenance, such as light tweezing, but make sure he knows to leave it to the experts to trim long hairs and even thin out too-bushy brows so that the final result doesn’t look too thick or heavy. The goal is to make his brows look groomed, but not overly done.
Waxing or Tweezing? While most people prefer waxing, more women and men are turning to tweezing or threading to achieve a more customized look to their brows without the skin breakout hassles. While most men think all they can do is wax, they may want to consider tweezing as well. Why? Tweezing lets you go in and mess up that perfect line that waxing tends to create. This, in turn, makes the brow appear more natural-looking and less defined (which skews feminine). Tweezing is also more precise and lets the pro get only the hairs needed, creating a more natural yet cleaned-up brow for men.
Perfecting the Brow. Women who seek professional brow grooming tend to be their own pros when it comes to doing their brow makeup, but did you know that men can get in on this as well? The goal is to create a brow that doesn’t look made-up or “done,” but that also appears consistent. With the invention of brow mascara, men can fill in the gaps and sparse areas of their brows—with no one being the wiser. Brow mascaras are softer in color and not as thick as regular mascaras, so they’re easier to apply and can make a man’s brow look more groomed and defined. Just remove excess product from the mascara wand, and then lightly brush through the brow where needed. Let it dry, and then with a clean brow brush or mascara wand, brush through to remove any excess off the skin while also blending the brow color. You will get instant natural-looking brows and, trust me, no one will be able to tell there was any makeup involved! –Elke Von Freudenberg
