Elke Von Freudenberg doesn’t pluck and tell. I know this because yesterday I met with this eyebrow specialist who has shaped, waxed and tweezed some pretty high profile Hollywood types over the years. Try as I might to get her to dish up some names, she wouldn’t play. Elke is a pretty smart cookie for reasons other than not giving up her stars.

Editors get the greatest invitations during New York Fashion Week and unfortunately most of us have very limited time to indulge and miss out on some wonderful opportunities.

A natural eye lift starts at the brow

A defined eyebrow arch can take years off your look - aestheticians call it a mini eye lift.

“Eyebrows do much more than frame the eyes,” says makeup artist and eyebrow specialist Elke Von Freudenberg. “They also tell others around you a story - your story. Are you confident? Tired? Sad? Powerful? Once women have had their eyebrows done terribly wrong, they realize the importance of eyebrows and what they tell others about you.

“The goal of perfect eyebrows is to have people notice your eyes and you, not your eyebrows.”

Von Freudenberg recommends taking an extra row off the bottom of the inner portion of the brow to create more space and widen and open the eyes. She also adds a soft highlight shadow to wake up the eye (check out the how-to online) and distract from the hairs that grow in between grooming appointments.

Von Freudenberg’s “The Brow Collection” is a line of products that allows anyone to create their own look. She also offers personal tips on how to use each piece. For example, her new Lash Brow Groomer includes a brush side and a comb side. Elke’s tip: Use the brush side to brush brows up as you tweeze and shape them. (As you brush upward, you can get a better idea of the line and shape of your brows.) Use the comb side to comb and hold brows in place to trim.

Her line also includes brow pencils, shadows and additional brushes.

A brow site I’m totally in love with is The Model Brow Blog by Elke Von Freudenberg. She does an amazing job and her blog and brow tips are succinct and easy to follow. She gives great advise too, like ‘once the arch has been tweezed too far on the outside of the eyes, it can make the eyes look cross-eyed’ and commenting that ‘problem with arching [the brow] too high is that it creates the dreaded ‘happy face’ brow’. One of the things I def wanted to do in NYC was to go see the fab “Eyebrow Specialist” Elke Von Fruedenberg. I had been trying to coordinate my trips with her bi-coastal schedule and was lucky enough to get an appointment for this trip on Saturday morning. So, before I went, I took a “before” pic of my brows: Little messy, but I like a fuller brow, so, that’s what she got to work with. And this is how great they looked afterwards: She told me that I had great shape, that my arch was in the right place, but that she wanted to just “sharpen them up a bit”. I was all for it and I think the results are great. (*the makeup is after my appt at Saks for the D&G Makeup launch - def more about that later.) And here I am with the lovely lady herself: She was super generous with her time - even after my epic address FAIL! She does brows a neat way - she put on her super magnifying reader glasses and has you *sit up* in front of her, not laying down. She says this way she sees how your face falls naturally and can better shape your brows to fit your face this way. The didn’t use any wax or threading on me. While bright shades come in and out of style, celebrity makeup artist Elke Von Freudenberg says, “The trend is all about skin this year- and making it look as flawless as possible with the least amount of makeup.” Easier said than done, right? Not if you work from these simple steps!

“Pick your eye/lip/cheek colors to be in the same family range, but with a lighter/medium/darker version of the same shade,” says Elke. She recommends putting the darkest of the three on your favorite feature (for me, that would be my eyes) and then working your way down to cheeks and lips. My favorite brow guru, Elke Von Freudenberg, actually sets up shop (half the time) at Slope Suds, right near me in Park Slope, Brooklyn. (She splits her time between NY and LA.)

I spoke to her this weekend and asked if she could share some tips with us on achieving the perfect brow, and she had some great ones!

1. When tweezing brows, hold the tip or slant of the tweezer against the skin the whole time as you tweeze going in the direction of hair growth. By keeping the tweezer against the skin, you keep away the ouch factor.
2. Avoid applying brow makeup first and going by that to tweeze and design a shape for you brows. You may be tweezing hairs that you actually need to keep the shape you want.
3. Keep that highlighter brow or shadow handy. It keeps those little hairs that you haven’t yet tweezed hidden by bouncing light away from the skin.
4. Your brows should start between the bridge of your nose and your tear duct. Check to see how much space you have between your brows and it’s better to keep the space smaller than larger. Too large a space between your brows actually makes your nose look bigger.
5. Keep the arch of your brow right above the outside edge of the iris of your eye. Any further out and your eyes can look cross eyed, specially in photos.
6. Grooming above the brows is fine, as long as you’re grooming hairs that are on the forehead. Any hair that is in the brow itself can distort and remove the arch of the brow.
7. Keep tweezing and waxing hairs at the ends of the brows at a minimum. Hairs here are the first to stop growing and the hardest to grow back in.
8. Avoid applying any heavy or oily products to your brows after you’ve waxed or tweezed. You’ll prevent those tiny red bumps or breakouts from happening that way.
9. To keep away the ouch. hold the skin down on the area you’re tweezing. it’s the skin moving that hurts, not the hair.
